Car Insurance Volvo (Car Insurance). Help with Fuel Injector project?

Help with Fuel Injector project? I have a question that I hope to get some feedback on about injectors etc.. I have no real experience with fuel injectors and need some feed back before I go off half ****** and waste my time. What I want to do is a science fair demonstration. Where I demonstrate the performance or operation of a fuel injector visually. This will demonstrate how the car's computer by controlling the signal to the injector it can meter the precise amount of fuel needed and any given speed by controlling the on time. What I want to do is get a cheap used injector and fuel pump a from a junk yard. Mount the injector on top, facing down and inside a enclosed transparent box, in air, 8 inches above a fuel reservoir. In the bottom of the box there will be a fuel pump submerged in my "fuel". A colored liquid that is non flammable for safety reasons. I'll use a 12dcv plug in power supply, for power to the fuel pump and injector. I will connect the fuel pump to the injector with copper tubing and with a simple button switch control the on time and showing the injector spraying fuel. Will this work as you see it? Any suggestions on safe fuel, is dyed water ok? What distance does the injector spray? Thank you for your help.

Sounds basically reasonable. One issue might be with your "on" time. Injectors operate with tens of millisecond timings and the fuel pump and pressure accumulator on the fuel rail are designed to keep a pressure of about 50-60psi on the rail. If you have an injector open for very long your rail pressure may drop some but shouldn't be much of an issue for your simple demo purposes. The spray pattern for the injectors is a fine mist, not a stream. A stream would not get good atomization of the charge in the incoming air. So basically expect to see a fine puff of mist from the open injector. Not quite as appealing as the lawn sprinkler you may have been thinking of.

Volvo . How Do I Know If a Starter Solenoid or Starter Needs to Replaced?

For do-it-yourself mechanics, a vehicle that won't start is reason to immediately start running down the possible reasons and how they might be diagnosed. A vehicle's engine usually will not start because of a failure of one of three parts--the battery, solenoid or starter. If you have determined that your car battery is in good, working condition, test and pinpoint either the solenoid or starter as the part that should be replaced.
Difficulty:Moderately Challenging
Instructions Things You'll Need
Large screwdriver with heavy plastic or rubber insulated handle
VoltmeterStarter Test

Step by Step :
1
Park the vehicle on flat ground, put the transmission in "Neutral" if you have a manual transmission, and set the parking brake.
2
Locate the two big post electrical connectors on the back of the solenoid. Make sure that you are touching only the rubber insulated portion of the screwdriver, and short across the two electrical connectors by touching the metal portion of the screwdriver to both connectors at the same time.
3
Listen for the starter motor running once you make the connection across terminals. This removes the solenoid from the circuit so that you can isolate the starter motor without actually starting the engine. The starter motor should be running smoothly and not making any rough or strange noises. If it runs well, you can assume it is not the problem and move on to test the solenoid. If it runs poorly or does not run at all, replace the starter motor.
Solenoid Test

Step by Step :
1
Park the vehicle on flat ground, put the transmission in "Neutral" if you have a manual transmission, and set the parking brake.
2
Locate the post terminal on the back of the solenoid that has the short, heavy-braided wire connected to it and running to the starter motor. Press the positive lead of the voltmeter firmly into this braided wire, and press the negative lead of the voltmeter to a heavy metal part of the engine block.
3
Have a helper turn the key to try and start the engine. Watch the voltmeter while he does this. With a properly functioning solenoid, you will hear a clunking sound and see a reading of 12 volts on the voltmeter. If you don't, have the solenoid rebuilt or replaced.

Volvo . How to Clean a Solenoid Starter

If your starter seems to be sluggish or failing, it may need to be replaced. You can remove the starter and have it tested at an auto parts store. If testing the starter determines that it is not bad, it may just need to be cleaned. Once the starter is removed from the car, you can disassemble it and clean it easily with common tools. Cleaning out any dust, dirt and grime from the components of your starter can improve the connections and function, saving you money on an unnecessary replacement.
Difficulty:Moderately Easy
Instructions Things You'll Need
Lubricant cleaner
Clean soft rags
Soft brush
Abrasive pads
Socket and ratchet set
Wrench set

Step by Step :
1
Place the starter on a clean, flat surface. Clean the outer case of the starter with a lubricant cleaner and an abrasive pad or light brush. This will prevent any contaminants from entering the starter components when you take it apart.
2
Remove the two bolts on the outer end of the starter using a wrench or socket and ratchet. These bolts are all that secures the starter motor together. The bolts are long, so it will take a minute to back them out. Set the bolts aside in a safe place after cleaning them with the lubricant cleaner and a rag or brush.
3
Pull the starter apart into three sections. The motor will separate easily once the retaining bolts are removed. The two outer ends will come off leaving the inner cylinder as the third piece.
4
Clean each component carefully with the lubricant cleaner and an abrasive pad, light brush or rag. If there is dirt or grime stuck in an area, the abrasive pad or brush will help break it loose with the cleaner. Otherwise, the soft rag should work well with the cleaner.
5
Reassemble the starter components to the same orientation they were in when you disassembled the motor. Reinstall the retention bolts and tighten them securely with a wrench or socket and ratchet.

There's one catch to changing the fuel filter, however. The next section has the details. Bleeding and priming the fuel system Whenever you change the fuel filter or run out of fuel in a diesel, you must bleed the air bubbles out of the fuel system and then prime it to get a new supply of fuel circulating. Because cranking the engine does the job but also wears down the battery, most diesels include a manual primer pump and an air-bleed screw for this purpose. On many vehicles, you simply pump the primer's handle to get the fuel moving and then turn the air-bleed screw until a hissing noise tells you that the air is escaping. Just keep pumping until all the air leaves and the noise ceases; then tighten the air-bleed screw and replace the pump handle. . Chapter 7: Diesels and Alternatively Powered Vehicles 1 A C Because bleeding and priming the fuel system is something that may occur fairly often, I suggest that you check the equipment and procedure for any model you're interested in purchasing to be sure that you can do this job quickly and easily. Water separators Because diesel fuel can easily become contaminated by water, many diesel 359 Car Insurance dodge charger 2009 sedan4d 39407

cars feature a gadget called a water separator, which is usually located on or near the primary fuel filter. If your vehicle doesn't have one, I strongly sug gest that you have one installed. This part shouldn't be terribly expensive, and it can save you a bunch of money on repairs. You can usually drain both integral and optional water separators by turning a little drain valve called apetcock and emptying the water from the collection chamber of the separator. *ts a S°°d idea to check the water separator weekly at first to see how fast it fills up under normal conditions when you're driving on fuel from your usual source. If the fuel contains a lot of water, you may want to consider buying it elsewhere. Getting started on a frosty morning Metal cylinder walls become very cold whenever the temperature drops, so most cars are harder to start in cold weather. Because diesel engines require much higher temperatures to fire the fuel, they have always been harder to

start in cold weather than gasoline-powered vehicles are. To warm things up before the engine can run, a variety of heaters have been developed that keep various parts of the vehicle warm and snuggly even when it isn't being driven. Some of these gadgets may be on the vehicle when you buy it; others you can buy and install later on if the need for them arises. <\V kr H you're planning to buy a diesel, be sure to ask which heating devices are included in the purchase price. If you live in a cold climate or do much traveling, it may be a good idea to have several devices available for extreme weather conditions. The next sections describe some of your options. Block heaters Many diesels come equipped with electrically powered block heaters that are built right into them to keep the engine block warm overnight. You simply park the vehicle and plug.the heater cord into a heavy-duty three-pronged extension cord; then plug the extension cord into a 110-volt electrical socket that can handle a three-pronged plug. Don't skimp on the length of the extension cord — it can be 50 feet to a socket from a motel parking lot! I've been told that in Alaska, where a heater is vital, electrical outlets have been built right into some parking meters. I doubt that anyone tries to beat those meters, especially at -40 degrees. Part II: What Makes It Go?. If your vehicle doesn't have a block heater, you can buy one and have it

installed. Various types are available, but immersion-type heaters are the most popular. When buying a heater, consult the charts at the dealer to match the wattage of the heater to the size of your engine and the range of weather you expect to encounter. A high-wattage heater will run up your electric bills unnecessar ily if you have a small engine or don't expect the temperature to go below zero very often. Battery Mariners If your diesel won't start in cold weather and you remembered to plug in the block heater, your battery may be the culprit. Batteries can lose 35 percent of their power at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and as much as 60 percent at 0 degrees. Because the battery has to supply the glow plugs with sufficient juice to get things warmed up, a frostbitten battery isn't of much use on an icy morning. This problem has two remedies: You can buy a battery with greater capacity (providing that there's room for one under the hood), or you can buy a battery warmer. The two most popular models are the "hot plate" warmer, which simply slides under the battery like a cookie sheet and warms its little toesies, and the "electric blanket," which wraps around the battery and uses more current to deal with really frigid situations. Both simply plug into a nearby 110-volt socket.

Oil (Partners and other gadgets You can buy a heated dipstick to heat the oil in the engine crankcase (just trade it for your normal dipstick and plug it into an electrical outlet) and a host of other gadgets to warm the coolant in the engine and the fuel in the fuel lines. (Most people don't need all this stuff, but for my readers in Alaska, Canada, and other cold climates, I thought I'd cover the subject thoroughly....) I recently came across a handy hint that may work in a pinch: On a day when your block heater isn't able to combat the cold effectively, try turning on your electric hair-dryer and putting the nozzle into the car's air intake. The warm air should help your engine warm up faster. What not to do on a frosty morning Never use engine-starting fluids to start your engine — no matter how eager you are to get underway. The ether in these fluids can ignite at such low temperatures that you risk a fire or an explosion — either of which can mean severe damage to both yourself and your precious diesel. Although the containers do give instructions, measuring the "safe" proportions required is just too hard. If you feel that you must use this stuff, you can find starting-fluid injection kits that are safe and effective; you may want to have one of these installed. Just stay away from those "convenient" spray cans!
